Lately, I’ve been getting a ton of requests (in outlook, I don’t know if this exists for other email platforms) for “read receipts.” Meaning, when someone sends me an email they request to be notified when I have read the email. Outlook gives the receiver of the email (me) the opportunity to allow “read receipts” or deny them. I always deny them.
Even if I don’t care if the person knows I’ve read the email or not, I think in a social norm context this email “receipt request” is intrusive and rude. If I reply to your email that is your response… and if I don’t, it is — as you put it so eloquently in this article- a polite no.
