Ah you said it so perfectly and I was like yes! we’ve figured it out- the value is in the probability of the increase in status (socially) weighed against the investment level and risk.
But, then you bring up the absolutely valid point that it makes no sense why we humans should care about a loss of social investment.
We do though.
My theory is this: before money and even before precious stones were used as currency, humans used social engagement as investment. In order for people to trade with you they had to like you. Mostly they had to trust you. So you had to do things like holding the cave door open for the ladies and sharing your kill with the rest of the tribe. As people in your tribe recognized your contributions more and more, your staus grew and you gained more power.
So, if our social investments are ignored we’re pissed because without the recognition they’re kind of worthless. And if they’re rejected. even nicely, they’re also kind of worthless because we can’t contribute value to our clan.
