Femtech
I first heard the term Femtech at a health startup conference. I walked up to a pink laden booth situated between a booth promoting 3D printed Prosthetics and one that was showcasing a new backpack designed to hold supplies for diabetes care. I asked the woman behind the booth to describe her product and she told me about a small case that holds a woman’s birth control. The smart case uses its accompanying app to send the user an alert when it is time to take their birth control. If a dose is missed, the app sends you texts every 5 minutes until you take the pill. I was intrigued but I had questions. The founder of the company, called Aavia, described the fundraising process to me and the uphill battle that was being fought on that front. In 2019, however, it seems that Venture Capitalists are finally paying attention to Femtech.
What is Femtech?
According to Ida Tan, the founder of Clue (a mensural cycle tracking app)and the woman credited with the first use of the word, Femtech is “a new and huge category addressing female health needs through technology.”
