Lessons From Rework

Many business books claim to be a “playbook” for X. How to network, how to scale, how to sell, how to define your life’s purpose and find happiness- you get the point. Whenever I read those kinds of books I am always thoroughly disappointed. Maybe my expectations are too high but, more likely, the summary of the book was aggrandizing the value of the information. Understandably, I was skeptical when I opened Rework for the first time.

Realisms

The first chapter sets the “don’t give a f**k” tone right away. The author describes how the “real world” is full of pessimistic do-nothings and you shouldn’t follow their lead. The subsequent 5 chapters discuss why failure is not a rite of passage (as many college dropouts turned billionaires would have you believe), how business plans are nothing more than guesses and should be treated as such, why bigger isn’t always better when it comes to the size of your company, and that being a workaholic isn’t sexy- its disturbing.

The real world isn’t a place, it’s an excuse.

Execution

In the next section details how to advance your business in a way that fits your own personal values and motives…
