Mike thanks for the thoughtful response. I think part of what you said is true and there's a ton of research that backs up the fact that too much choice is paralyzing. However, being “unfocused” is not a result of this plethora of choice it is a decision in and of itself.
It’s hard to set goals, stay determined, and work toward them. Distraction is everywhere and it takes intention for a person to stay focused. However, I think the millennial generation is hard working and capable enough to sift through the noise, make a career choice, get a job (or an internship) in that field, and determine if it feels like a good fit.
It’s not that too much choice makes it too hard, maybe it’s just that people need to work a little harder.
