Where Have I Been?

This is a quick update on why I’ve been quiet these last 6 months and what I’m up to now!

Whew! What a year.

First, I want to thank everyone who has reached out and asked if I’m okay. Believe it or not, those messages really made me feel loved. Even if we’re just internet friends, I consider you all a part of my ecosystem. You all are the reason I write, produce videos, conduct research, put together papers, and curate resources.

My last article was from August of 2020 *cringe* — that makes me so sad. I love writing and having intellectual discussions (which often result from reading and writing about various topics) so to have that missing from my life the last 6 months has been so tragic.

In late August I lost my grandmother to covid. We were very close and it was a huge disruption to my life. I used to visit her and write from her nursing home every Sunday. I miss her more than words can express.

Obviously, this is why I stopped writing for a while. I was processing emotionally and dealing with the logistical details of trying to plan a funeral during a pandemic.

In November, I was feeling as recovered as one can be after a major loss. Unfortunately, I found out my grandfather- who had been sick for a while- had passed. He taught me so much. How to whistle, how to stand up for myself, what it means to work hard and have dedication. He was a special man. I still pick up my phone to facetime him but then remember I can’t.

I don’t think that pain ever really goes away.

So, I took another respite from any non-essential activity to heal.

Sorry to depress you all- I just wanted to explain a bit about the circumstances of my absence. It’s not all covid-related though. Some other things have gone on as well- I moved cities, adopted a dog, this holiday season was madness, and I just turned 27 last week.

It’s not that I haven’t been dreaming, working, and reading- I just had to process some things before I could get back to writing.

On to some happy news!

Late last year I began working with an emerging Startup Studio called Untapped Ventures. As many of you know, I write in-depth about Startup Studios on my blog Studio Upstart and have even established an online community where Studio builders and enthusiasts can come learn about the industry and connect with one another.

As we worked together, I found Untaped Ventures to be an excellent Studio run by brilliant minds. Over time, I began to work strategically with the CEO of Untapped, George Bandarian, to develop the Studio’s thesis/ investment focus which is the New Future of Work (think Slack, Zoom, VR, AI, productivity tools, workplace wellbeing, and platforms for emerging models of work like Fiverr).

In January of 2020, Untapped Ventures acquired Studio Upstart and I came on full time as Chief of Staff and Operations Manager. I can’t express to you all how elated I am to work in such an innovative Studio every single day but just know that this is the crowning achievement of my career thus far. That should give you some indication as to how excited I am to be where I’m at.

Speaking of the Studio, I want to plug something quickly:

Untapped Ventures has open applications now through Thursday 2/18 for our Future of Work Studio-Accelerator program.

If you’re an entrepreneur or founding team seeking to disrupt the current work landscape- you should apply for this program. We’re doing co-founder matching for those who need it, problem discovery, ideation, market validation, product building, launching, testing, and scaling. When ventures are ready for fundraising- Untapped is ready to invest + help startup teams fundraise with outside investors.

Writing and learning! Now that I’m in a good place emotionally, mentally, professionally, and even physically I am fully committed to writing again. Having worked within a Startup Studio these last 3 months, I’ve gained so much insight that I didn’t have before.

In addition to writing about the inner workings of Startup Studios, I plan to write about the Future of Work, well-being, behavioral science, books I’m reading (just finished Building a Brand Story and loved it!), businesses we’re building within the Studio, new opportunities and much more.

Again, I want to thank you all for being patient and sticking with me. It’s been a hell of a journey but I feel stronger, more energized, and wiser than before. I have no doubts 2021 is going to be a great year for us all!

Endlessly curious about the human condition. Founder of Studio Upstart. Chief of Staff @ Untapped Ventures.
